EA and Chinese production company revving up Need for Speed 2 film

According to Variety, EA is looking to follow up Need for Speed’s first cinematic outing in a co-production with the same Chinese partners that funded Transformers 4 with Paramout, China Movie Channel.

EA and China Movie Channel are apparently looking to start production later this year so long as they’re able to secure the rights from Dreamworks. With co-funding coming from China, much of the production would be filmed there and would feature Chinese actors in significant roles according to an announcement from China Movie Channel Program Center, Jiaflix Enterprises and 1905 Pictures.

The first Need for Speed film starred Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul and was released in 2013. It managed a worldwide take of $203 million USD off a $66 million USD budget. While $43.5 million USD came from the United States, the film’s biggest region was China where it took $66 million USD.

No other details have been revealed about the film, although a studio representative from Dreamworks has confirmed that talks regarding the rights have not yet begun. It’s not clear whether Paul would return in the sequel.
