Nintendo Switch: 2 million units will be shipped worldwide at launch

Nintendo has re-affirmed that there will be 2 million units shipped worldwide during the Nintendo Switch’s launch on 3 March.

“What we’ve said publicly is that there will be 2 million units that will be shipped worldwide for the launch, essentially through month one,” Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed with Wired.

The executive also assured gamers that the Switch will not be plagued by a lack of available consoles, unlike the recently released NES Classic Mini.

“What happened with NES Classic is that was a situation where the global demand was well in excess of anything we had anticipated, and that’s what created shortages,” Fils-Aime said. “The good news, at least for consumers in the Americas, is we’re going to continue to make the NES Classic available. With the ongoing level of supply, the ongoing demand is going to be met. We know the concern.”

According to Bloomberg, Nintendo’s shares fell 5.8% during the Switch’s detailed livestream on Friday, dropping a further 2% today.

“Pricing and game titles were as expected; the stock was bought up on hopes and sold on the fact,” Ace Research Institute analyst Hideki Yasuda told Bloomberg.

“The first two weeks of sales will be critical for Nintendo, and they will have to sell the 2 million units they forecast for the quarter. The Switch’s success will be determined at the start.”
