Psyonix toyed with Rocket League player counts; decided 3v3 is the “sweet spot”

Vice President of Psyonix, Jeremy Dunham, took to the Major Nelson podcast to talk Rocket League ahead of the game’s debut on Xbox One this week.

“We experimented with larger player counts but it’s too crazy,” Dunham said. “Maybe one day we’ll revisit it if we ever decide to go with bigger stadiums. But for now, more than 4v4 we think takes a little bit away from the enjoyment of the game; it gets a little too crazy.”

Though you can play Rocket League in 1v1, 2v2, 1v2, 1v3 and 1v4 modes, Dunham said that 3v3 is the “sweet spot” whereby the game functions best.

Rocket League launches later this week on Xbox One. It’s currently available on Windows PC and PS4.
