Review: Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance “Jetstream” DLC

If you play through Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance‘s “Jetstream” DLC, the first thing you’ll notice is that you’re basically playing through the game a second time. The locations are the same, the enemies are the same and their animations – you guessed it –are the same.

The second thing you’ll notice is that you’re playing as a Brazilian bad-ass.

“Jetstream” places you in the shoes of Sam, your quasi-nemesis from Revengeance‘s normal campaign, and gives you a chance to see what he went through as Raiden was busy carving enemies up himself. Cannon fodder enemies and boss battles alike are basically recycled for Sam’s adventure, but the big difference in the DLC is that each encounter feels different due to the change in main character.

Sam is a totally different fighter than Raiden; slower to attack and with an even smaller window to successfully parry attacks – like it wasn’t hard enough already — you aren’t able to play through “Jetsteam” in the aggressive way of that other cyborg. Instead, you’ll rely far more on Sam’s faster dodge ability, plus his DmC-like double-jump and air-dash .

Your new protagonist (of sorts) possesses a variety of quickdraw attacks that can be charged up, and a cool taunt move that is a mixed-bag. Taunting enemies enrages them, meaning they’ll attack far more aggressively than a normal baddie, but they’ll also be more susceptible to Sam’s attacks. It’s a cool little risk-reward system that mixes the familiar combat of Revengeance up a tad.

Coupled with the main story content are five extra VR missions that can be quite challenging. The coolest mission is definitely the last, turning into an old-school side-scrolling adventure that is a treat to play through.

At 800 Microsoft Points, this DLC isn’t all that cheap. If you’re super frugal, you might want to try the “VR Mission Expansion” DLC – of which we’ll have a review of shortly — for 240 MSP. Otherwise, if you enjoyed Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and want more hack-and-slash in its world, this pack is for you. It’s as polished as the main game itself, which should really have been expected, considering Platinum Games is behind it.
