Xbox Series X controller to use AA batteries

The Xbox Series X controller will continue to use AA batteries, mirroring the controllers that shipped with Xbox One and Xbox 360, Microsoft has advised.

“What it comes down to is when actually talking to gamers, it’s kind of polarising and there is a strong camp that really want AAs,” Microsoft’s Jason Ronald told Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry.

“So just giving flexibility is the way to please both [sets of] people… You can use a rechargeable battery pack and it works just like it does on the Elite, [but] it is a separate thing.”

Personally, we’re fine with the idea — as Ronald says, you get the best of both worlds; we recommend a battery pack that can be charged by USB-C, but would also recommend having a handful of rechargable AAs on hand too. You’d hate to be in a great bit of a game only to have to pause for a bit ’cause you run out of juice.

The Xbox Series X is slated for a Holiday 2020 release.
