Xbox One Preview Program consoles stuck in endless update loop; we’ve a fix

Users in the Xbox One Preview Program have taken to Microsoft’s official forums as well as NeoGAF to complain of an update loop that appears to force consoles into offline only mode.

Upon starting their Xbox Ones, users are taken to an update page, presumably connected to the Xbox One February Update (1502). It then fails, saying, “You need this update to use your console, but something went wrong.” Repeated attempts to retry the update do not work.

While it appears that Xbox Ones in this loop won’t be able to connect to Xbox Live or the internet, there is a (sometimes permanent, sometimes temporary) fix.

For those with this problem, simply scroll down to “Go offline” in the failed update screen. Then, head over to Settings > Network and choose to “Go online”. This will allow your Xbox One to connect to Xbox Live without the phantom update.

We’ve tried this on two of our Preview Program consoles and one hasn’t had problems since. The second went back to the update screen after about 45 minutes, where the temporary fix then seemed to hold.

Have you encountered this problem? Sound off in the comments below.

Update: Microsoft has said this issue should be resolved now. That said, are you still encountering issues? Let us know, below.
