Those in Germany, Poland, Ireland, Italy, and South Korea can remain on former rates.
Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox Game Pass subscribers “in certain areas” will avoid new price hikes if they remain on recurring billing. The publisher also confirmed the freeze in pricing will exist “for now”, so expect that to change sooner rather than later.
“At this time, these increases will only affect new purchases and will not affect your current subscription for the market in which you reside, as long as you are on an auto-recurring plan,” Microsoft said in an email sent out to subscribers in regions including Germany, Poland, Ireland, Italy, and South Korea.
“Should you choose to cancel your plan and repurchase, you will be charged at the new current rate,” it continued. “If for any reason there may be changes to your existing account, we will notify you at least 60 days in advance and you will have the option to cancel or change your subscription plan at any time.”
It’s believed these regions have regulations that would prohibit Microsoft from changing pricing without proper notice, hence the inclusion of a 60-day notice period. It’s also bolstered by Microsoft’s confirmation of the email and its terms.
“Our recent Game Pass update remains unchanged,” a Microsoft spokesperson told PC Gamer. “Current subscribers in certain countries will continue renewing at their existing price for now, in line with local requirements. We’ll provide advance notice before price adjustments take effect in these countries.”
The keywords there are “for now,” so those Germany, Poland, Ireland, Italy, and South Korea should all but expect a price hike 60 days from now.
