VR: HTC Vive retail, Microsoft HoloLens dev kits up for pre-order

It’s a big day for virtual reality (VR), with HTC Vive retail units and Microsoft HoloLens development kits both up for pre-order.

The HTC Vive can be pre-ordered for $818 USD, totaling $928 USD after shipping.

The $1303 AUD (after shipping and conversion) package includes the headset itself, alongside two wand controllers, some room scale movement sensors and three VR games. The games include Fantastic Contraption, Job Simulator and Google’s Tilt Brush.

Vive pre-orders are expected to ship from 5 April, and are currently limited to one per customer.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has started taking pre-orders of HoloLens dev kits.

Costing a whopping $3,000 USD, the kits come with the headset alongside several tutorial videos and guides. Those who wish to pre-order a kit must be part of Microsoft’s Insider program and be a working developer within the US and Canada.

We’re working to see when HoloLens dev kits will be available to Australian developers. Kits in the US and Canada are expected to ship by the end of March.

[Update: Added Australian pricing for the Vive.]
