Unpacking imposters pulled from Nintendo eShop following Vooks exposé

Score one for the little guy.

Nintendo eShop “slop” meant to cash in on the success of the Aussie-made Unpacking has now been pulled from sale after an exposé from (the equally Aussie-made) Vooks.

According to the Vook in Vooks himself, Daniel Vuckovic — say that ten times fast — a post on social media started the campaign, and followed an article from Luke Henderson on the subject that was published back in June of this year.

Now removed from the eShop, a title by CGI LAB was called Unpacking Deluxe Edition and looked to capitalise on the success of Witch Beam’s 2021 cozy game Unpacking. According to Vook, his whinge about the “low-effort eWaste” caught the attention of Witch Beam itself, which when contacted Nintendo in hopes of the listing’s removal. Additional variations of the initial imposter title appeared on the eShop during that time.

“It’s been over two weeks and these are still on the eShop,” Witch Beam’s Wren Brier wrote just one day before the imposter titles’ removal. “Nintendo hasn’t responded to any of our reports of these egregious scams which are using our trademarked game name and purposely tricking Nintendo customers into buying cheap fakes.”

“The fake Unpacking games are now gone from the NA, EU, JP, and AU eShops,” Brier wrote yesterday. “BUT they are still available in Korea, Hong Kong, all of South & Central America, and South Africa.”

In our review of Unpacking, we called the title “a great little indie game by homegrown developers that’s well worth your time”. It’s currently available on Windows PC, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS4, PS5, Switch, iOS, and Android devices.
