The PS4 doesn’t need an always-on internet connection

If yesterday was about what the PS4 could do, today is definitely about what it can’t do, or doesn’t need. Case in point: the President of Sony Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, has confirmed that Eurogamer that the PlayStation 4 does not require an always-on internet connection.

“Oh yes, yes, you can go offline totally,” said Yoshida. “Social is big for us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social. So if you don’t want to connect to anyone else, you can do that.”

There you have it — if you don’t use the internet at all times, you’re anti-social.

That aside, Yoshida confirmed that the PS4 has a secondary custom chip that will allow users to play games as they’re downloading, and the the PS4 will also be able to download or upload content when the main console systems have been shut off.

That same chip will allow the PS Vita — or iOS and Android devices using the “PlayStation App” — to wake up the PS4 remotely.

Are you breathing a little easier now, PlayStation fans?
