Switch sales have surpassed GameCube, with almost 23 million sold

The Nintendo Switch has now surpassed the GameCube in sales, with 22.86 million units sold since launch in March 2017. The Gamecube sold 21.74 million units worldwide between 2001-2007 (although it wasn’t released in Australia until May 2002).

The Switch is selling very well, but it does have an uphill battle to hit its 20 million projection for the current fiscal year (April 2018 to 31 March 2019), where it has currently sold 5.07 million units. Of course, Super Smash Bros Ultimate and the Let’s Go Pokemon games launch in that period.

The top three selling games on Switch are Super Mario Odyssey (12 million), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (11 million) and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (10.3 million).

On its current trajectory, Switch will surpass the Nintendo 64’s 32.93 million sales in 2019. Then it can turn its attention to Nintendo’s most successful consoles and handhelds: the SNES (49.1 million), NES/Famicom (61.91 million), 3DS (73.53 million), GBA (81.51 million), Wii (101.63 million), Game Boy (118.69 million) and DS (154.02 million).
