Star Trek Discovery Season 5 is the show’s final season

And maybe that's a good thing?

Star Trek Discovery Season 5 will be the series’ final season, Star Trek head Alex Kurtzman has today announced.

“Your love for these characters and your excitement for every episode, every season, has meant the world to us,” Kurtzman said in a statement alongside showrunner Michelle Paradise.

“We can’t wait for you to see what we’ve been working on for this final season; we appreciate your patience in the meantime and trust when we say it’ll be worth the wait.”

Star Trek Discovery has had a checkered past; the show was originally set in a time period before Star Trek The Original Series. Glaring discontinuity — we’re looking at you, Klingons — forced the show to fling itself into Star Trek‘s future (the 32nd Century, to be exact). Fans frequently slam the show for its reliance on a lead character that is always at the centre of a universe-destroying event, while others celebrate it (including this author) for its diversity and heart.

“The fans welcomed us into their hearts as we launched a new iteration of Trek and an entire entertainment platform, and we’ll never forget it,” said Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays Captain Michael Burnham.

“Sixty-five episodes later, here’s to the entire company of Star Trek: Discovery, to the show and its fifth and final season, to its beloved fans, and to all those who envision a better future,” Martin-Green continued.

“It has been the privilege of a lifetime to join the [Star Trek] universe,” said co-star Anthony Rapp, who plays Commander Paul Stamets. “Thank you to all of you who’ve welcomed us into your hearts. To say that I will miss working with my incredible Disco family is a profound understatement. They’ve made my world better in every way.”

Star Trek Discovery is available on Paramount+ here in Australia; a release date for Season 5 is as yet unknown, but will be held back until 2024.
