Spotify to power PlayStation Music on Xperia, PS3 and PS4

Spotify and PlayStation have teamed up to provide a new service called PlayStation Music, heading to PlayStations this autumn.

The new app will take the place of the soon-to-be-defunct Sony Music Unlimited app. Said app will cease functioning on 29 March.

Current Music Unlimited subscribers will receive a free month of the service from 28 February to 29 March.

PlayStation Music will let Spotify link their accounts on consoles to play either ad- or subscription-supported play. Like Spotify itself, the application will also support offline play for subscribers.

The new service will close down PlayStation’s old offering, Music Unlimited, on March 29. PlayStation users may then link their accounts to Spotify and play its free, ad-supported streaming music or its $10-per-month premium service that runs ad-free and is playable offline.

PlayStation Music will launch in 41 markets — we’re working to confirm Australian availability — and will work on Xperia phones and tablets, PS3 and PS4. No mention of the service on PS Vita has been made.

Update: Sony has confirmed that PlayStation Music will indeed head to Australian shores.
