"The Season 1 launch hasn't achieved the level of success we needed."
Spectre Divide will be taken offline within the next 30 days as developer Mountaintop Studios has confirmed it will close its doors within the week.
Mountaintop formed in 2020, made up of a number of big name talents including co-founder of Oculus Nate Mitchell, Naughty Dog concept artist (and Aussie!) Rich Lyons, Double Fine COO Matt Hansen and Hidden Path COO Mark Terrano. Spectre Divide launched in September 2024 after a period of early access.
Mitchell took to Reddit with the unfortunate news.
“Unfortunately, the Season 1 launch hasn’t achieved the level of success we needed to sustain the game and keep Mountaintop afloat,” Mitchell wrote.
“We were optimistic about the first week,” he continued. “We’ve had ~400,000 players play, with a peak concurrent player count of ~10,000 across all platforms. But as time has gone on, we haven’t seen enough active players and incoming revenue to cover the day-to-day costs of Spectre and the studio.”
Servers will be taken down “within the next 30 days,” Mitchell continued, and “we expect to refund all money spent on Spectre since Season 1 launch at 9am PT on Feb 25 [2025]”.
Self-hosted servers will not be possible, Mitchell continued, as “the studio is closing before we’d be able to transition the game to community-hosted servers”.
Available for a short remainder of time, Spectre Divide is free-to-play and available on Windows PC via Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation.
