Sony’s “Day 1 Digital” program provides for digital downloads of new titles on release day

First, it was Nintendo with a day-and-date digital release for New Super Mario Bros. 2. Now, Sony’s following suit with a selection of new releases that will be available from the PlayStation Store on their respective retail launch days.

Sony took to the PlayStation Blog to announce its “PSN Day 1 Digital” program, that allows users to purchase and download this Spring’s major releases through the PSN on launch day.

On offer in the program are October releases Resident Evil 6 (2 October), NBA 2K13 (2 October), Dishonored (9 October), DOOM 3: BFG Edition (16 October), 007: Legends (16 October), Medal Of Honor: Warfighter (23 October), Need For Speed: Most Wanted (30 October) and Assassin’s Creed 3 (30 October).

Those gamers who are also PlayStation Plus members receive a 10% discount on NBA 2K13, Dishonored, Doom 3 and Need for Speed: Most Wanted with a pre-order.

Well, Microsoft — you’re falling far behind now when it comes to online services. Best sort yourselves out, eh?
