Sony shuts down PS5 faceplate maker PlateStation with reported legal action

PlateStation, the company that rebranded as CustomizeMyPlates and was offering third-party, customisable PS5 faceplates, has closed up shop after reported legal action from Sony.

Speaking with VGC, a representative from the site said that it did its “due diligence” and believed it could sell its wares as Sony “only had pending patents on the faceplates”.

“But then Sony’s lawyers told us it was their opinion, Sony’s intellectual property extended to the faceplates, and that if we continued to sell and distribute them in any country, we would end up in court,” the rep continued.

“This all came to light yesterday and we are now cancelling and refunding all faceplate orders worldwide… we are extremely disappointed about this but we have no other option.”

If you’ve ordered custom faceplates, you should have an email detailing your refund.

While Sony’s recent teardown video shows that the console’s faceplates can be easily removed, it’s yet to offer customisable faceplates beyond the standard white fins that ship with the console.

The PS5 heads to store shelves on 12 November.
