Sony pulls PS3 4.45 firmware update after acknowledging it can potentially brick consoles

Sony today pulled its PS3 4.45 firmware update after many console owners complained that the update has rendered their device unusable — or, in gamer lingo, “bricked” their PS3.

“We are aware of reports that the recent PlayStation 3 system software update (version 4.45) has caused the XMB to not display on a small number of PS3 systems,” Sony confirmed in a statement earlier today. “We have temporarily taken 4.45 offline and are investigating the cause of the problem. We will announce when the system update is available for download as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience.”

The 4.45 firmware update appears to freeze some console during the update process, meaning the unit won’t boot up to the console’s XMB menu. The PS3’s power button will then become unresponsive, meaning the unit has to be powered down at its powerpoint.

Affected customers should head to PlayStation Australia’s PS3 Support page for assistance.
