Sony increases price of PS5 in Japan (again)

Sony blames a "challenging external environment”.

Sony will increase the price of the PS5 in Japan for a second time, the company has today revealed.

Blaming a “challenging external environment,” Sony will raise the price of a disc-based PS5 to ¥79,980 (from ¥60,478), and the discless PS5 to ¥72,980 (from ¥49,478). The prices above will be put into effect from 2 September 2024. For the moment, console prices in other countries will not be impacted.

“Given the recent challenging external environment, including the current fluctuations in the global economic situation, and the impact it will have on our business, we have reached this decision,” reads a translated statement from Sony.

Sony raised the price of the PS5 in a number of regions including Japan back in 2022. Other impacted regions at that time included Australia, Europe, the UK, China, and Mexico. Prices were not raised in the USA.

Sony will also raise the price of peripherals including the DualSense and PlayStation VR2 within Japan. We’ll keep you informed of potential price increases for other regions including Australia.
