Sony backflips on mandatory Helldivers 2 PC PSN link

Players... aren't happy.

Update: Sony has backflipped on the mandatory linkage between Helldivers 2 on PC and a PlayStation Network account.

Helldivers fans — we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update,” Sony said in an update.

“The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.

“We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans.”

It’s as yet unclear if the title will once again become available to the 177 countries Helldivers 2 has just been delisted from on Steam.

Original story [4 May]: Helldivers 2 now requires a PlayStation Network account to play on Windows PC via Steam, and players aren’t too thrilled with the idea.

Sony updated the title’s Steam page with this new requirement, saying it was “critical” to the “safety and security” of the title.

“Due to technical issues at the launch of Helldivers 2, we allowed the linking requirements for Steam accounts to a PlayStation Network account to be temporarily optional,” Sony advised. “That grace period will now expire.”

The publisher continued on to say that, “This is our main way to protect players from griefing and abuse by enabling the banning of players that engage in that type of behaviour. It also allows those players that have been banned the right to appeal.”

Perhaps needless to say, players aren’t thrilled with this new requirement.

“Sony’s record is awful for protecting data, this account linking decision is terrible,” Nickerluz wrote, also pointing out numerous instances of Sony data breaches.

“So for the people living in regions where PSN isn’t nominally available, you can cite that as a reason for refund and it’ll generally be accepted,” added EX-Xecty.

“At least with Microsoft account you have cross-progression in your Forza or Halo games,” said cl0sedude. “What’s the point here with PSN account I just don’t understand.”

When fully required, those on PC who play Helldivers 2 will get an on-screen prompt to perform the account linking exercise. If you need to create a PlayStation Network account, you can do so here.

Helldivers 2 is currently available on Windows PC and PS5.
