Sega’s Crazy Taxi reboot will be an open-world MMO

Yay?

Sega’s Crazy Taxi reboot, just one of a number of planned retro revivals, will seemingly have a different take on familiar gameplay as an open-world massive multiplayer online (MMO) title.

A behind-the-scenes look at development from Sega itself has confirmed Crazy Taxi‘s new MMO approach, in which a number of players driving taxis will race one another, all chased by (convertible) police cars.

“Series producer Kenji Kanno remarks that the upcoming game is being developed as a ‘completely new’ Crazy Taxi that can be played by many players at once,” reads an English summary of the Japanese language video, as undertaken by Automaton.

“The team is currently resolving the specifics and testing the game’s compatibility with multiplayer play,” it continued. “Their goal is to maintain the Crazy Taxi style while implementing new mechanics. Apart from a realistic city environment, the developers mention working on a theme park-like map and motifs inspired by the US West Coast.”

Back in February of this year, Sega confirmed that the Crazy Taxi reboot would be a triple-A title, developed across two Sapporo Studio locations.

Announced back in late 2023, Sega is hard at work on revivals of classic franchises including Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and of course Crazy Taxi.
