Sea of Thieves will never have loot boxes, Rare says

Sea of Thieves will never have in-game loot boxes, developer Rare has confirmed.

The assertion comes from design director, Mike Chapman, who seems to consider loot boxes as “a form of gambling.”

“There’ll never be a form of gambling in Sea of Thieves, of any description,” Chapman told PCGamer.

The assertion doesn’t carry over into microtransactions, sadly. Chapman said they might feature in-game at some point, but in a “new take” on the idea if so.

“So it won’t just be like, ‘oh, they’ve slapped microtransactions in the game, how interesting’. No, what’s a Sea of Thieves way of doing it? What’s going to bring value to our players? I think that’s the way we’ll do it,” he said.

Sea of Thieves heads to Windows PC and Xbox One on 20 March.
