Is Sony actually funding Shenmue III?

The internet’s gone a bit crazy today with the suggestion that Sony’s actually funding Shenmue III, and that the Kickstarter launched last night at the Sony press conference was more to gauge consumer interest.

Trusted industry source Wario64 took to Twitter to start the ball rolling:

Near the same time, PlayStation Germany tweeted that Sony is indeed working with Ys Net, Yu Suzuki’s development house, on the game:

Translated (as best we can), the tweet says something like, “Sony is working with Ys Net, and strongly supports Shenmue 3.”

We’ll stick with this when it’s made clear just how much interaction Sony has with Ys Net.
