Report: PS4 will emulate, not stream PSone, PS2 games

Eurogamer yesterday reported that the PS4 will use emulation software to play original PlayStation (PSone) and PS2 games.

The site cites a source close to Sony for the revelation.

The source said that the PS4 will hold the backward-compatible PSOne and PS2 emulator and games directly on its hard drive, rather than making use of PlayStation Now and streaming technology.

Moreover, the source said the emulation software would upscale SD assets to HD, removing the need for HD remakes.

The source also said that PlayStation Now would exclusively stream PS3 games to the PS4.

Good news (if true) for PSone and PS2 fans… but will this emulation be packaged as “PlayStation Now” regardless? We still don’t have a definitive release date for that service in Australia.
