PS5 to add variable refresh rate (VRR) in the coming months

Silky smooth.

The PS5 will add variable refresh rate (VRR) support in the coming months, Sony has today announced.

A feature available on Xbox Series consoles since their launch in 2020, Sony has included VRR support in a post detailing “fan-requested features”.

“On HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output,” Sony said, explaining the feature.

“This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing. Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes render instantly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced.”

When VRR support is enabled on consoles, titles can choose to provide in-game support. Users can also opt to turn on VRR support for unsupported games, though Sony notes that “if this results in any unexpected visual effects, you can turn off this option at any time.”

Ben sang the praises of VRR as part of his Xbox Series X hardware review a couple years back.

We’ll let you know when you can expect to see VRR support on the PS5.
