PS4 owners must toggle HDCP on and off to record video content or access other sources of video content

The PS4’s newest update allows for video game capture… provided users toggle the system’s HDCP (high-bandwidth digital content protection) on or off, depending on what activity they’re engaged in.

If gamers would like to perform video capture on a game like inFAMOUS: Second Son, they’ll need to go to Settings > System and HDCP to “Off”. This will allow devices like the Elgato Game Capture to work properly.

If gamers then want to use PS4 apps that deal with other types of video, such as content from Hulu Plus, Netflix or the WWE Network, they’ll need to go and manually toggle the HDCP setting back to “On”. If a user doesn’t set the toggle before launching the app, they’ll be informed they must do so first.

HDCP toggling is automatic on the Xbox One.

The HDCP toggle is part of the PS4’s 1.70 update. Full details of the update can be found on the official PlayStation 4 website.
