PS1 classics on PS4, PS5 won’t require PlayStation Plus subscription

Great news!

PS1 classics on PS4 and PS5 won’t require a PlayStation Plus Extra, Deluxe or Premium subscription, it’s recently been shown.

With PlayStation Plus set to kick off today in several Asian regions, new listings show that PS1 classics like Oddworld Abe’s Oddysee can be purchased and played for a one-time set fee.

Today’s discovery backs a statement made by Sony earlier in the month.

“Players who have previously purchased the digital version of select games from the original PlayStation and PSP generation will not have to make a separate purchase or sign up to PlayStation Plus to play these titles on PS4 or PS5,” the publisher said.

Moreover, PS1 classics will be beefed up with new features that include (selective, perhaps?) Trophy support.

“PlayStation Plus Premium/Deluxe members will have a selection of popular classic games to play, with some titles that will show improved frame rates and higher-quality resolution compared to their original launch versions,” Sony advised. “For select original PlayStation and PSP classic games, members will also enjoy a new user interface with menus that allow you to save your game at any time, or even rewind the game if you want a do-over.”

The new, tiered PlayStation Plus heads to Australia from 22 June; we’re not cloud supported so we’ll miss out on PS3 classics entirely.
