PlayStation Stars loyalty program detailed by Sony

... and launches in Australia on 13 October.

The PlayStation Stars loyalty program was today detailed by Sony for players across PlayStation consoles.

The program will launch later this year, and allows players the chance to accumulate points through play.

“Once you become a member, you’ll earn rewards by completing a variety of campaigns and activities,” Sony’s Grace Chen wrote in a blog post.

“Our ‘Monthly Check-In’ campaign simply requires you to play any game to receive a reward, while other campaigns require you to win tournaments, earn specific trophies, or even be the first player to platinum a blockbuster title in your local time zone.”

Loyalty points “can be redeemed in a catalog that may include PSN wallet funds and select PlayStation Store products,” Chen continued.

Sony will also introduce the concept of “digital collectibles” via the program. They’re described as “digital representations of things that PlayStation fans enjoy, including figurines of beloved and iconic characters from games and other forms of entertainment, as well as cherished devices that tap into Sony’s history of innovation.”

Chen later clarified with the Washington Post that NFTs won’t be part of PlayStation Stars’ digital collectibles.

“It’s definitely not NFTs. Definitely not,” Chen said. “You can’t trade them or sell them. It is not leveraging any blockchain technologies and definitely not NFTs.”

Update: PlayStation Stars will launch in select regions in Asia in late September, followed by launches in America and Europe. We Aussies are usually lumped with Europe when it comes to Sony, so expect the program a little later than Asia.

Update 2: Sony has confirmed that Australians will be able to join the program from 13 October.

We’ll have more on PlayStation Stars as it’s made available.
