PlayStation Classics expiring, unplayable on PS3 & PS Vita

A number of titles appear to be impacted.

A range of PlayStation Classics appear to be expiring and therefore becoming unplayable on PS3 and PS Vita.

Twitter user Christopher Foose appears to be the first to notice the issue, saying that the PSone PlayStation Classic Chrono Cross was displaying an expiration date of 31 December 1969, rendering it it unplayable on both PS3 and PS Vita.

Aussie GamesHub editor Edmond Tran corroborated Foose’s report in part, showing a similar expiration date (we’d image timezones come into play with the one-day difference), but said he was still able to download and play Chrono Cross on Vita. Tran also reported that the PlayStation Classic no longer appeared on the Vita store.

Since then, a number of users have taken to social media with similar issues. You can read a big Reddit thread on the matter here. Other PlayStation Classics impacted by this error include the likes of Rune Factory Oceans, Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy Origins and more.

While some believe this is connected to Sony’s upcoming PlayStation Plus revamp, others think it’s an error connected to the “Unix epoch” (via Kotaku), a date picked by early Unix engineers to provide a uniform start time and date for the operating system.

We’ve asked Sony for comment but as per usual, we don’t expect a reply.
