Platinum Games receives investment from Tencent to self-publish

Platinum Games has received new investment from Chinese publisher Tencent and plans to use the newfound capital to self-publish its games.

“We would like to announce we have received a capital investment from Tencent Holdings Limited as a basis for partnership,” a statement from Platinum reads. “This partnership has no effect on the independence of our company, and we will continue operations under our current corporate structure.”

The statement continues to assert the company hopes “to use this capital to strengthen our foundation as a business and expand from game development into exploring self-publishing.”

This is a decided change to Platinum’s business model; the studio generally relies on third-party publishers to fund and release its titles, which include the Bayonetta series, Nier Automata and more.
