Phil Spencer still wants to bring Xbox Game Pass to all platforms

Xbox head Phil Spencer has reiterated that he’d like to see the Xbox Game Pass subscription service on as many platforms as possible.

Spencer first made the statement back in December 2018, but this reiteration comes amidst rumours that Microsoft will announce Xbox Game Pass functionality on Nintendo Switch and mobile devices at this month’s GDC conference.

“We want to bring Game Pass to any device that somebody wants to play on,” Spencer told GeekWire. “Not just because it’s our business, but really because the business model allows for people to consume and find games that they wouldn’t have played in any other space.”

Spencer also detailed why a subscription service on multiple consoles wouldn’t cannabalise Xbox One console sales.

“That is not where you make money. The business inside of games is really selling games, and selling access to games and content in means like that is the fundamental business,” he said. “So if you open it up, the more often people can play, the more they’re enjoying the art form. It increases the size of the business.”

Microsoft has already confirmed that Xbox Live support will be offered to iOS, Android and Switch; already, Minecraft offers Achievements on Nintendo Switch.

We’ll keep you informed as we learn more from GDC — the event takes place mid-March.
