Overwatch’s new permanent ban system is swinging the banhammer a little too much

Overwatch’s new permanent ban system is working overtime, accidentally trashing players’ SRs and then removing them from play.

Users flocked to Reddit to report that disconnecting from the game while a map is loading will place then into a “waiting for players” state that continually fails and retries to matchmake. This causes massive SR hits throughout the process, eventually leading to a ban.

Thankfully, Blizzard said it is aware of the issue and is working on a fix.

“This bug is a high priority for our team, and we’re working on a fix to prevent further instances of it occurring as we speak,” Game Director, Jeff Kaplan, wrote on Overwatch‘s forums.

“In the meantime, we’ll be removing the seasonal ban for all players affected by this bug as well as restoring their skill rating. To date, this bug has impacted fewer than 200 accounts, but we’ll continue to monitor for additional occurrences and provide assistance until we can implement a permanent fix,” Kaplan continued.

It’s likely this bug was an unintended consequence of Overwatch‘s new permanent ban system. It was designed to reduce in-game toxicity, removing any players who receive three seasonal bans during play.

Overwatch is available now on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4.
