Next Xbox rumour mill: will use Blu-ray, always need internet, lock out second hand discs

With the potential unveiling of Sony’s PlayStation 4 just 13 days away, rumours about the next-gen Xbox are again circulating out fast and furious. Today, a number of outlets — led by Edge magazine — are making some big claims about the next Xbox.

Edge claims that next Xbox “will require an internet connection in order to function”, and moreover will require that all disc-based games have online activation codes that must be redeemed before the game can be used.

The online activation codes will be one-use only, an will assist in creating “a new iteration of Xbox Live” that will apparently eliminate the used games market.

Finally, Edge says an independant source has confirmed that the next Xbox will use 50GB-capacity Blu-ray discs for its physical media and will contain an in-build upgrade version of the Kinect.

These rumours — or ones very close to them — have been circulating since January last year.

Do you believe these claims? Personally, I think they’ll be close, but not spot on. I can imagine a system where you’ll need to spend 800 MSP or so on a new activation code for each of the games you’ve pick up second-hand. That way, you’re still going to be able to use the media, but the publisher who created it will always get some money back in their pockets. What do you think?
