New Witcher game coming on Unreal Engine 5

CD Projekt Red and Epic Games have partnered up.

A new Witcher game is in development through a partnership between CD Projekt Red and Epic Games that will see the title running in Unreal Engine 5.

CDPR today teased the new title with the tagline, “A new saga begins.” No other information about the new title — including setting, involved characters, available platforms or a release date — were provided.

The developer also used the announcement to detail a “multi-year strategic partnership” with Epic Games that will see the Unreal Engine 5 put to use rather than CDPR’s own REDengine. Epic Games will assist CD Projekt Red to “tailor the engine for open-world experiences, beginning with the development of the next game in The Witcher franchise.”

Despite the news, Cyberpunk 2077 will still use REDengine, including an as-yet-to-be-released expansion.

“This cooperation is so exciting, because it will elevate development predictability and efficiency, while simultaneously granting us access to cutting-edge game development tools. I can’t wait for the great games we’re going to create using Unreal Engine 5,” said CD Projekt Red’s Pawel Zawodny.

“Epic has been building Unreal Engine 5 to enable teams to create dynamic open worlds at an unprecedented scale and level of fidelity,” added Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney. “We are deeply honored by the opportunity to partner with CS Projekt Red to push the limits of interactive storytelling and gameplay together, and this effort will benefit the developer community for years to come.”

We’ll let you know when more on the new Witcher game is detailed.
