Microsoft was afraid the XBLA would “destroy the console industry”

Speaking with IGN, Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) creator Greg Canessa confessed Microsoft was afraid the marketplace would “destroy the console industry.”

Canessa said the publisher was concerned that digital delivery and lower price points would harm the traditional brick-and-mortar, physical delivery system.

“There was a legitimate fear that Xbox Live Arcade was going to cannibalize retail sales and completely destroy the console industry,” Canessa said. “That was actually a quote I got from one of the internal folks.”

The XBLA was launched on Xbox 360 and was discontinued on Xbox One. The current-gen’s current Xbox Store supports triple-A and indie titles, all with digital delivery.
