Metal Gear Solid V lets Snake have a(n expendable) buddy

During TGS 2014 Konami featured Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain quite heavily and during a livestream Director Hideo Kojima even provided commentary. As a result we have a range of new information on the game.

Yesterday we reported on Diamond Dog’s appearance in the game and the new buddy system. Alongside Diamond Dog is already revealed sniper Quiet, but in the final game Big Boss will be able to bring up to four buddies with him on missions. Buddies other than Diamond Dog and Quiet haven’t been revealed, but it’s confirmed that Ocelot won’t be available.

Buddies are entirely optional and can be avoided entirely or even missed, however they will open up new gameplay and sub-plots. Big Boss will only be able to take buddies on missions if they have a certain level of relationship with him and so if work isn’t put in at Mother Base the buddies won’t accompany him on missions. It’s also been revealed that the buddies — and Big Boss’ horse — can die in game, permanently. It won’t trigger a game over state nor will it affect the plot, but still, nobody wants to see a cute wolf with an eye patch die.

Kojima revealed that missions will be very open with the player dictating how and when to tackle them. Players will be able to land the helicopter in a location of their choosing, determine their own path through the landscape and even leap from the chopper before it’s landed. If you jump from too high though, Big Boss will die. Traversing through the environment isn’t all sneaking and horse riding as Big Boss can even climb rock walls.

Kojima claims that this is the game he’s wanted to make for 27  years and thanks to the power of the FOX Engine he’s now able to do it. He’s still not ready to reveal when it will be released, but says that after five years it’s nearing completion. Thanks to VG24/7 for the roundup of info.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be available for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
