Marathon gets experimental duos mode: “Some things will be a bit jank”

Easier to find a group than trios, less punishing than solo.

Marathon will add an experimental duos mode for those looking to break free of trios or solo, noting the experience may be “a bit jank”.

The experimental mode kicks off on 19 March here in Australia, and will be limited to the Perimeter map. The mode will run for around two weeks or so, and those playing in it will be put up against other duos teams while in a run.

“Just a note: this is a bit of an experimental feature so we expect to learn some things along the way and make changes to future versions of this,” added Marathon game director Joe Ziegler on social media.

“This likely won’t be the final implementation of how it would look and flow in the game, but for now it was [the] easiest way for us to get it to you all to help us test,” Ziegler continued. “We’re excited to run this experiment with you all. Pending what we learn, we’re hoping to expand duos as a queue in the future and we wanted to take this first step sooner than later so we could understand how it affects our game better before investing a lot more time in fleshing out the feature.”

Marathon is available on Windows PC, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PS5. We’re currently reviewing it here.
