Kinect has taught Microsoft to release HoloLens when “the world is ready”

Speaking with Recode, Alex Kipman, the designer of Microsoft’s HoloLens VR solution, said there’s no rush to release the product. In fact, lessons learned from the Kinect are really informing the company as to how to deal with this new offering.

“It was not a pleasant experience,” Kipman said of Kinect’s launch. “[The Kinect] was just not ready to sell 10 million units in 60 days, which is what it did.”

That knowledge has prompted Microsoft to carefully consider HoloLens launch plans.

“When I feel the world is ready, then we will allow normal people to buy it,” Kipman said, referring to the fact a $3,000 USD dev kit is currently available.”It could be as soon as we say ‘yes,’ and it could be as long as a ‘very long time.'”

We’ll have more on the HoloLens as it develops.
