James McCaffrey, the voice of Max Payne, has died aged 65

Far too soon.

James McCaffrey, the voice of Max Payne in the Max Payne franchise, has died aged 65 following a battle with bone marrow cancer.

The news of McCaffrey’s passing was first published by Entourage‘s Kevin Dillion, a friend of McCaffrey’s who wrote, “we were lucky to have known you. my best friend you will be missed.”

“I’m heartbroken to hear the sad news of James McCaffrey’s passing,” wrote Remedy Creative Director Sam Lake. “We worked together for more than 25 years. He was a lovely man and a dear friend. He was a key part of the Remedy family. He was a brilliant actor. No one could do what he did better than him.

McCaffrey was a mainstay in Remedy productions, of course voicing Max Payne alongside Director Zachariah Trench in Control and Alex Casey in Alan Wake 2. He also appeared on television in titles such as Law & Order, Suits and Blue Bloods.

“James was Max Payne, Thomas Zane, Zachariah Trench and finally Alex Casey,” Lake continued. “I had the honor of sharing Max Payne’s role and Casey’s role with him. He was a joy to work with. I will cherish his memory and I miss him. My deepest condolences to his family. Rest in peace, Jim.”

“One of Dick Wolf’s proteges, McCaffrey went on to a successful 35-year career in television and film,” added McCaffrey’s representative said in a statement. “Trained at the Actor’s Studio, he never lost his love for creating characters; however, his good looks often pushed him toward leading man roles.”

McCaffrey is survived by his wife Rochelle Bostrom, and daughter Tiernan. Our hearts go out to the actor’s family, friends, and loved ones.
