itch.io “reaching out” to other payment processors in wake of NSFW delisting

Game platform itch.io has said it is “actively reaching out to other payment processors” in the wake of its decision to delist NSFW (not safe for work) games from its library.

itch.io did so last week, due to pressure put on its current payment processors, PayPal and Stripe, by Australian lobbying group Collective Shout.

Taking to an update on the matter, itch.io said, “the situation is evolving as we await final determinations from our current payment processors, Stripe and PayPal. There are still unknowns that prevent us from providing a fixed timeline.

“In the meantime, we are actively reaching out to other payment processors that are more willing to work with this kind of content. We have suspended the ability to pay with Stripe for 18+ content for the foreseeable future. Our immediate focus has been on content classification reviews and implementing stricter age-gating on the site.”

The platform continued on to say that all NSFW games were delisted as part of this situation as it “is a small company, both in team size and in transaction volume, compared to a company like Steam,” and with “limited ability to ‘push back.'”

itch.io said “actions were taken to protect our payment processing abilities for as much of the platform as possible”, and swift actions were take so that “we [could] continue to operate and provide a marketplace for all developers”.
