Here’s Sony’s newest AR project, Wonderbook

Last night, Sony revealed the Wonderbook, a new augmented reality (AR) system that is launching with an interactive book written by J. K. Rowling herself.

Says Sony, “we have been working on a project called Wonderbook – an interactive book that uses Augmented Reality technology and PlayStation Move to bring stories to life before your eyes. The AR in Wonderbook has been developed by London Studio – the team behind EyeToy and EyePet. We believe that this is the most advanced AR out there, not least because it utilises brand new technology which enables enhanced fidelity.”

In the E3 demo last night, we saw Wonderbook bring J. K. Rowling’s Book of Spells — the first Wonderbook that will be released — to life, specifically highlighting the Harry Potter world’s “incendio” spell. Rowling has written Book of Spells to provide Harry Potter fans with some insight into the origins of the Wizarding World’s spells.

Wonderbook is a fairly solid implementation of augmented reality technology, but last night made it clear that its Move integration has some work left to be done. The person controlling the incendio demo had a devil of a time getting the spell to work using the Move controller.

It could be the next big thing, or it could be a gimmicky peripheral that’s forgotten about within the year. What do you think of Wonderbook?
