Helldivers 2 PC players issued refunds on Steam over PSN linking

Steam waives playtime limit clause and refunds players' money.

Valve is issuing Steam refunds to Helldivers 2 players on PC over a new requirement that enforces mandatory linking to a PlayStation Network account.

The refunds come after Helldivers 2 has been pulled from sale on Steam in over 170 countries that don’t directly support the PlayStation Network.

One thread on Reddit shows that a player with 97+ logged hours in Helldivers 2 was issued a refund due to the change. The user in question wrote, “Sony has retroactively changed how the game works and forced legal agreements upon me I do not accept” when asking for said refund.

Arrowhead CEO Joan Pilestedt has taken to the internet to acknowledge that the developer didn’t effectively communicate this change with its players.

“I am not blameless in all of this – it was my decision to disable account linking at launch so that players could play the game,” Pilestedt said. “I did not ensure players were aware of the requirement and we didn’t talk about it enough. We knew for about six months before launch that it would be mandatory for online PS titles.”

Pilestedt also commented on the wave of negative Steam reviews that have followed this new requirement.

“Well, I guess it’s warranted,” he wrote. “Sorry everyone for how this all transpired. I hope we will make it up and regain the trust by providing a continued great game experience.”

Publisher Sony is also fire for mixed messaging on its websites. Over the weekend, users noted that its UK website said that “some PlayStation games may require you sign in and link to an account for PSN” while the US page (now changed) read “signing in to PSN is optional when playing a PlayStation game on PC”.

To make matters worse, Ghost of Tsushima developer Sucker Punch has taken to social media to confirm that its upcoming PC release will not require mandatory linking to the PlayStation Network.

Helldivers 2 is currently available on Windows PC and PS5.
