Halo novelist Greg Bear has died at age 71

Halo novelist Greg Bear has died at the age of 71, the result of a stroke from clots that had built up since a surgery in 2014.

Bear had undergone another surgery earlier in the month, leading to the discovery of the clots. Following a period of unconciousness, Bear’s advance directive to end life support was followed and he passed away two days later.

A writer of over 50 books, Bear won five Nebula awards and helped to co-found the San Diego Comic Con.

In addition to his Halo novels — Cryptum (2011), Primordium (2012), and Silentium (2013) — he also wrote entries in the Star Wars, Foundation and Known Space franchises. His final book at 2021’s The Unfinished Land.

Bear is survived by his wife Astrid and daughters Chloe and Alexandra. Our best wishes go out to his family.
