Halo 5: Guardians has microtransactions in its multiplayer

Halo 5: Guardians developer 343 Industries has published a blog post explaining multiplayer microtransactions in-game.

A new currency called REQ Points has been added to the game. Said currency can buy weapons, skins, armour and more… and it turns out, gamers can buy REQ Points with real-life money rather than earning them through gameplay in Warzone or Arena.

343’s Josh Holmes wrote that the ability to purchase REQ Points was offered “as a matter of convenience,” adding that the currency can only buy cosmetic items in Arena.

In the newly-announced Warzone, where REQ Points buy weaponry, Holmes stressed that a balancing system will be put in place to avoid pay-to-win situations.

This is accomplished by two controls; first, Warzone matches are assigned a REQ Level that dictates what weaponry can be brought into a game. Second, individual and team performance will open up slots in Warzone that further dictate what weaponry can be used.

“The REQ System is designed to generously reward players with a steady stream of content to keep gameplay fresh,” Holmes asserted. “We’ll be continuing to release new REQ content, post launch, so there are always new toys to play with. All REQ content in the game can be earned through the regular course of play in multiplayer.”
