Remember: Gran Turismo Sport is mostly an always-online game

Just a friendly reminder that Gran Turismo Sport is essentially an always-online game.

We ran into problems reviewing the title in our review — most modes were locked out as we needed to download a 13GB patch before even trying to connect the game to online servers. More problems arose as the servers weren’t actually available, pre-release.

Without an internet connection, you’re basically locked out of everything but Arcade mode, allowing for single races.

Ars Technica reminds us of a post on the PlayStation Blog, which basically spells this out.

“In order to ensure fair racing for all, GT Sport will require an Internet connection for the majority of functionality,” the post reads. “This connectivity requirement is to ensure that progress, car availability, and driver ratings are properly maintained at all times.”

The game also provides the opportunity to obtain a real-life FIA racing license, so the need for always-online functions becomes even more apparent.

It’s not a gigantic deal — just ensure you’ve a wired or wireless connection at home when you play, and you’re sorted. It’s just something to keep in mind.

Gran Turismo Sport is a PS4 exclusive now available to racing fans. Our review is ongoing.
