Even Charles Martinet doesn’t know what a Mario Ambassador is

But he's eager to learn...

The former voice of Mario, Charles Marinet, has admitted that he doesn’t know what the role of a Mario Ambassador is as he transitions within Nintendo.

In late August, Nintendo confirmed that Martinet would no longer voice the iconic character and instead would be “moving into the brand-new role of Mario Ambassador”.

Speaking at GalaxyCon, Martinet has said he’s not sure what he’ll be up to as part of the position.

“I’m not retired as it were, I don’t know how – but I’m an ambassador and as we step forward into the future I will learn – we’ll all learn what exactly that is,” Martinet said.

“But in the meantime… I’m always an ambassador of Nintendo and Mario and all of these events because I just cherish every moment of it, and I hope your love of the games continues and grows the way mine does, so thank you so much.”

You can watch Martinet’s panel below. We’re also awaiting a video from Martinet and Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto on the change.

Update: The promised video has now been released, and doesn’t shed any light over what’s going on with Wonder‘s voices.

It’s a little unclear if Martinet will be voicing Mario in the upcoming Super Mario Bros Wonder; that title is expected on Nintendo Switch from 20 October.
