E3 2022 wholly cancelled, may return for 2023

E3 2022 has been wholly cancelled, with its organisers today confirming that planned livestream event has been pulled.

“We previously announced that E3 would not be held in person in 2022 due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19,” the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) told GamesBeat. “Today, we announce that there will also be no digital E3 showcase in 2022.”

Back in January, the ESA said it would scrap a physical convention in place of a livestream instead. The organiser used a similar model back with E3 2021, though many publishers declined to take part or instead aligned with Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest initiative instead.

Keighley himself took to Twitter after news of E3 2022’s cancellation broke, simply posting a winking emoji followed by a retweet of Summer Game Fest 2022 information.

The ESA told VentureBeat that it plans to “revitalize” E3 for 2023; next year’s event is touted as “a reinvigorated showcase that celebrates new and exciting video games and industry innovations.”
