Switch GameCube controller support an accident: Nintendo

Life is full of happy accidents — including Nintendo Switch GameCube controller support, it was recently revealed.

In conversation with Kotaku, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime fessed up to the accident.

“In our latest system software update, it enables third-party peripherals to work on Nintendo Switch,” he said. “As a result, the peripheral for Wii U that allows it to attach GameCube controllers also works. I think it’s fair to say…  that peripheral working was as much a surprise to us as it was to consumers.”

The latest update also enabled profile and save game transfers and support for wireless headphones — but they were intentional.

Nintendo released Super Mario Odyssey for Switch late last week.
