DirectStorage brings Xbox Series loading times to PC SSDs

Why not give it a go?

DirectStorage is now available on Windows PC, offering Xbox Series-speed loading times on eligible solid state drives (SSDs).

As detailed last year, DirectStorage is described by Microsoft as a technology “pioneered as part of the Xbox Velocity Architecture featured in the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.”

The tech is an API that uses hardware compression and SSDs to reduce CPU workload and increase loading times. DirectStorage is available on PCs running both Windows 10 and Windows 11, though Microsoft encourages users to upgrade to Windows 11 if they haven’t as yet.

“This release of DirectStorage provides developers everything they need to move to a new model of IO for their games, and we’re working on even more ways to offload work from the CPU,” Microsoft said in a new blog. “GPU decompression is next on our roadmap, a feature that will give developers more control over resources and how hardware is leveraged.”

It’s unclear exactly which games will support the new offering, though Square Enix’s Forspoken has been confirmed to. Expect that title in October 2022.
