Call of Duty won’t have back-to-back releases of Black Ops or Modern Warfare

Activision acknowledges "the franchise has not met your expectations fully."

Activision Blizzard has acknowledged that Call of Duty Black Ops 7 “has not met [players’] expectations fully,” and has promised it will no longer ship back-to-back releases of Black Ops and Modern Warfare iterations year-on-year.

“Thank you for all for the feedback we have received over the last few months,” the publisher said in a statement. “Call of Duty has enjoyed long-standing success because of all of you, a passionate community that demands excellence and deserves nothing less. We also know that for some of you, the Franchise has not met your expectations fully.

“To be very clear, we know what you expect and rest assured we will deliver, and overdeliver, on those expectations as we move forward.”

Detailing a larger strategy, Activision Blizzard confirmed that, “we will no longer do back-to-back releases of Modern Warfare or Black Ops games. The reasons are many, but the main one is to ensure we provide an absolutely unique experience each and every year.

“We will drive innovation that is meaningful, not incremental. While we aren’t sharing those plans today, we look forward to doing so when the time is right.”

In our review of Black Ops 7, Ben said that, “the Black Ops 7 campaign completely loses its way and is the series’ worst since Treyarch didn’t bother to include one at all with Black Ops 4. It tries to borrow from elsewhere to do things differently, but doesn’t do a good job and loses what makes Call of Duty campaigns great in the process.”

Call of Duty Black Ops 7 is currently available on Windows PC via Steam and Battle.net, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5.
