Borderlands 3 cross-play here, but not on PlayStation

And it's unclear why.

Update: Borderlands 3 cross-play is now live on all supported platforms… meaning PlayStation misses out.

Original story: Borderlands 3 cross-play is on the way, but won’t be available on PlayStation consoles.

The news comes from Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford, who took to Twitter with “good news” and “bad news”.

“Good news or bad news first,” he wrote. “Good News: An update for Borderlands 3 has been prepared for release that includes full crossplay support across all platforms. Bad News: For certification, we have been required by the publisher to remove crossplay support for PlayStation consoles.

At the moment, it’s unclear why cross-play was removed from PS4 and PS5.

In the past, Sony has made moves to block cross-play in titles like Minecraft under the guise that the titles played better on PlayStation. Most recently, Epic Games has said Sony requires some publishers to pay to implement cross-play in their titles.

As far as we can surmise, this issue with Borderlands 3 is because Sony has requested that cross-play be turned off, or that Borderlands 3 publisher 2K Games has declined paying Sony for the privilege. We’ve reached out to both companies for clarification.

Borderlands 3 is available now on Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS4, PS5 and Stadia where available.
